Rise and shine

I'm surprised I slept until 7 am...although I didn't go to bed until 1 am! I woke in the middle of a dream where we couldn't find the music we're supposed to use this afternoon. We kept inserting new CDs and none were right!! I guess my subconscience is working in high gear! Last night I got to hang out with my always beautiful friend Ann-Mari, and of course my teammate Marit Anne. A good way to reload after day 1 of the convention, albeit I didn't participate in many classes. The one class I couldn't miss though was the one with my sweetheart friend Anna Duberg. I'll add a picture of us taken after her 'Afro Inspiration'.

I'm in Oslo, and it's almost time for NIH Fitness convention. The class Marit Anne and I are presenting is tomorrow afternoon. That leaves plenty of time to prepare - and hopefully enjoy some other classes as well! Right now it's time for breakfast.

I'm adding a picture from last weekend's instructor course. 19 talented young women, not to mention beautiful people! A privilege to be working with them.

Intense craving

Some days I'm just not controllable. Today is one of those days. I simply HAD TO have candy! I bought "smågodt" at the supermarket, and for a very good reason that always reminds me of my friend Lene. She is extremely fit, and when you see her you wouldn't think she ever ate anything unhealthy. However, if she is anything like she used to - she has a dessert stomach reserved for "smågodt"! Currently she works as the International Education Specalist in the Norwegian fitness company "The Corebar". Check out her blog.

The Credo Experience

Last night the host of the three day course I'm attending invited us all out for dinner. Fylkeslegen took us to no less than one of Trondheim's better restaurant, Credo.

Wow! Absolutely wonderful. The food, the wine, the ambience, my companions In sum: a great night out!

Girls in the city

Alina, who is finishing her internship program on the Island of Frøya, has become a really good friend over the last few months. We've been in medical school together for six years, but I have only known her by name. I slowly made her acquaintance while we worked in the department of surgery and internal medicine. However, when we got to the 4 month part of our program in psychiatry, we ended up sharing offices. After hours of chit chat enjoying ice cream in the sun, discussing academic issues as well as hair and clothes - we realized that we have a lot in common! As Frøya is half an hour from Hitra, we feel that we're "in it together". Being desentralized is easier when we have Tuesdays together, being the social highlight of the week!

This week we're participants at "Fylkeslegens turnuskurs", a three day course in Trondheim. It feels wonderful to be in the city; spa, hair dressers, hotel, fancy dinners.... Yup, we're shallow indeed... Besides, instead of arriving home late in the afternoon on Friday I'll be home early!

Last week's dinner at Casa Alina (public housing on the island of Frøya):

And last night at Britannia - Alina with her new hair do!

A happy moment

You know when you've been doing something for so long, and you're starting to feel that you're really just working in circles? When you've contemplated letting go and spend time on other aspects of life, but that doesn't quite suffice either? That's when you need to find an activity that lets you continue to work on your skills yet offers the extra challenge. Now where does this reasoning come from?

It's the conclusion I've come to after I've spent 14 years as a fitness instructor. I've taught cardio, dance and yoga in all kinds of variations as well as managed a two digit number of instructor trainings. Today I'm proud to say that I've added something new to my list. My work has been recognized and I'm going to present one of my group fitness classes at the NIH fitness convention in Oslo in November!

Together with me is Marit Anne, an awesome instructor who I actually got to know during one of the before mentioned instructor trainings! We're going to have a ball, and can't wait to team teach in front of the fitness professionals of Norway!

Birthday bash

This year I hit the new twenties, or so they say. We celebrated it by inviting some of our good friends over. Andreas and his girlfriend Elisabeth came from Molde. Heidi and Per Olav joined us after they'd arrived back home from vacation outside Gothenburg, a trip that lasted all day and where they also had the task of entertaining their three small children. I'm still impressed how energetic they looked when they arrived! Tone came from Oslo where she's in veterinary school. Ane came with her husband, and she's due in less than a week! Hilde, Elisabeth, Kjersti and Kristine, all friends from medical school, came over and made it a memorable evening. Marit Anne represented all my aerobic friends, and looked stunning as always. Lastly, Maryam, Roar and Siri Marte stopped by briefly.

We had tapas on the menu, can't fault it. A good way to spend the night before heading out to Hitra for the first time... More on that later!

Someone always ends up in the kitchen!!

Wrinkles, extra weight, sagging boobs... Bring it on!!

Instructor training

This weekend SiT idrett hosted yet another instructor training. Group fitness is very popular, and the demand for new instructors seems never ending. I have been educating new instructors since the fall of 2005. This time around Ida Mjøsund and Marit Anne Holten are the other education specialists on the team. Ida is a physiotherapist with a bachelor degree in sports science and Marit Anne is a teacher who holds a master's degree in natural sciences as well as a one year study in sports science on University level. I am blessed with talented and knowledgeable colleagues. Not to mention how we become good friends as we work closely together!

I've added movie clips of Ida in action. Enjoy!

National Constitution Day

Here in Norway we celebrate the National Constitution Day by gathering in the city centers. Central to the celebration is cheering, small flags, hot dogs, soft ice cream and heliumfilled balloons going off into the distance (with a similar number of desperate parents, tending for their devastated child). The day starts off with a children's parade where they walk with their school class and teacher. Afterwards there is a public parade with organizations, theatres, sporting teams and soforth. The last parade is for the "russ", that is the graduating class in high school. For some reason we have a tradition that the russ dress up in red or blue overalls, based on the classes they've taken during
high school (blue is economical classes...go figure..), and in some areas of Norway they add a lab coat decorated with art - and wear this for about three weeks while partying and drinking, until they have their final exams. Ingenious?

Tradition for us is breakfast with champagne at our friends' house, sometimes we make it in to town for the second parade, other times not... This year we saw the public parade, where in fact there was a crowd of foreigners as there's recently been a World Beard and Moustache Championship in Trondheim. Pictures below ;).

Oh -and I almost forgot. We dress up in the bunad, our national costume.

C-H-I-C-A-G-O

Last year one of my best friends got married. The last time I saw her was in fact in my own wedding in 2007, but we've stayed in touch through emails and I've seen her mom in Atlanta in the meantime. You know the type of friend where you don't see them for a long time, but once you're in a room together you're back in the comfortable 'best friends relationship' within minutes? Well, that's Kalle for you. Knowing how much it meant to me to be present on her big day my husband gave me this for my birthday:

Now - what was this? A puzzle! He'd laminated a picture of the Chicago skyline, cut in into pieces, and I was completely taken by surprise! It should be evident by now that Kalle and her chosen one live in Chicago. Their wedding, however, was in Savannah, GA, and because of my internship situation I wasn't able to get time off from work (for a long time I didn't know what hospital I'd be in, and thus didn't know who my employer would be -which makes it kind of hard asking for time off...). Kalle and I had agreed that the better option was to come and visit them in Chicago, and get to hang out. In April we took off - and spent two weeks in the US. Kalle and Micheal were great, and we had the best time.
Day 1: Rune had arranged for Kalle and I to go to a spa! He knew that I'd been going through some rough time, and that this vacation was a much longed for break from everything. And to start the vacation with the best massage ever cannot be described in words... Afterwards we did what Kalle and I do best: went for a cup of coffee! And obviously - shopping...!

Day 2&3: Weekend time! The four of us hung out in the city of Chicago, going out for brunch, walked in the park, along the beach...chilling and enjoying ourselves!
Day 4-7: Our hosts had jobs to attend to, so Rune and I got out the GPS and selected our next destination. It was time to visit Elvis. Our rental Lincoln towncar headed due south towards Memphis, and Graceland was our first stop. It was interesting, and kind of fun to have been there - but I've never been to a more commercial museum in my life. After two hours we'd had enough, and waved Elvis goodbye. The weather in Memphis was great, and we spent the next day in downtown Memphis, visiting the cotton museum and simply hung out. The next day we headed back to Chicago and our hosts.
Day 8-10: Kalle and Micheal had rented a lake house in Douglas/Saugatuck in Michigan. Although the weather was cold and it rained most of the time we had a great time. The house was unbelievably nice, the hot tub out on the patio much appreciated, the wineries interesting (ice wine, anyone?! ;) ), the food satiable, and of course the best part: our company :).
Day 11-13: Wrapping up the vacation back in Chicago before we boarded our plane back to Trondheim. Did I mention we had snow in Chicago? We couldn't believe it - traveling from cold Norway to Chicago in the spring... Oh well, not that it made a difference. Spending time with Kalle, and getting to kn
ow Micheal was our mission, and I've gotta say. Mission accomplished! We don't see each other often, but when we do, it is like we've haven't been a day apart since high school.

SiT BeneFiT -Group fitness charity

A lot has happened lately. In fact I'm at the point where I feel mostly empty, and I cannot begin to explain how much I'm looking forward to our upcoming vacation (more on that in a few days). A week ago my aunt died in the hospital. She was full of vitality and her spirit was filled with an intention to live. However, the cancer was brutal and eventually she gave in. The funeral was on Friday. The following day I had the pleasure of co-hosting a charity event at our gym. Eight instructors had prepared a 2,25 hours aerobic class; high intensity aerobic, Afro dance and zumba. The participants paid an entrance fee, and all of 1500 dollars was collected. The sum in full will be given to an organization that helps cancer patients exercise by providing/ building small gyms in the hospital area. It is called Active against Cancer, and was founded by Grete Waitz. The benefit meant a whole lot to me personally! Check out some of the instructors below :).

Friday - free time!!

Friday was my day off. And I spent it the best way there is: out in fresh air on skis! Luckily a good friend and colleague had the day off as well (unfortunately she works all weekend), and she is the prime reason we went telemarking and had a ball! Who would have thought we'd get great conditions and on top have Vassfjellet ski center practically to ourselves!

Blanket step 2

First, the fleece lining is sewed on...

Secondly I sew on the silk ribbon. I do everything by hand so this takes time. But hopefully the result is good!

Latest handicraft

Yesterday I ran 10 k on the treadmill in 53 minutes. Both Thursday and Friday were a letdown as I felt extremely heavy, and 5 k was more than enough. So it was a relief yesterday to be able to run and feel that I could go on and on and on. We're headed out to the gym in a little while, after the men's 30 km cross country in the world championship is over. Until then we're chilling in front of the TV ;). Fingers crossed for Northug and the Norwegian team!

I've knitted a baby blanket ("vognteppe"). It is made of 100 % wool and is really thick and warm. The next step is a fleece lining, so that it feels soft and not itchy against the skin.

More decorations

I got up at the normal time today, only to realize that my shift in the ER doesn't start until 11! It feels like I've gained a few hours...and I can't make up my mind as how to spend the time best! I'm pretty sure I'll devote some time to my amazon kindle and the book Shantaram :).

One of the other wall decorations I got was a self adhesive chalk board. On Thursday I also got a mini mail box that I'm planning on using for unpaid bills. Kind of makes the prospect of paying bills more appealing, or so is the idea.

I decided the refrigerator was as good a place as any for writing messages!

These new tin cans go well with my curtains and gives storage for espresso coffee.

I wish you all a grand day!

Wall decorations

I was inspired by my colleague Kathrine while reading her blog Pyslepia, and before I knew it I was on eBay ordering stuff I moments before didn't know existed...

One of the things I ended up with is this wall decoration:

What do you think?

Last day in Argentiere

We are at the end of a magnificent week in the Chamonix valley. 6 full days of skiing has been great, although this last day has shown us that we would've needed a day of relaxing if we were to go on for another week...!

If you ever go to Argentiere, stop by Rusticana, a cool local bar. If we ever come back, that's where you'll find us ;).

Below- the guys staking out our course.

Kristine lost a part of her boot and thus spent the day at 2000 m reading crime novels, while we went skiing. As you can see, Rune has had better days... Even our "engelsk setter"(=extremely energetic dog!) gets worn out!

We're almost back in Argentiere, after a descent of 2000m. Not much energy left. But I can assure you- we're HAPPY and CONTENT :).

One day left in France

Last night we decided it was time to try the specialty raclette: melted cheese with potatoes and a variety of cold meats. The guys were still full when it was time for breakfast this morning...

This morning,we hit the slopes at 9.30, more ready than ever!

Not a good idea to walk off onto the glacier on our own. Or should I say, off the glacier/off the cliff?!

We're still so lucky as to have clear weather with brilliant sunshine.

The view from 3300 m. Impressive, huh?

At the end of the day it's all about getting a rest!!
